Adelanto, California is located about nine miles northwest of Victorville, in the Victor Valley. Founded in 1915 by E. H. Richardson, Adelanto was one of the first master planned communities in Southern California. Originally designed to cater to veterans of World War I suffering from respiratory ailments, the plans for the city included a respiratory hospital. While Richardson's dream was never fully realized, his plans laid the foundation for the current city of Adelanto.
Originally a city known for fresh fruit and cider, Adelanto was once home to acres and acres of fruit trees. Depression era changes brought poultry farming to Adelanto, and the World War II establishment of the Victorville Army Air Field further changed the economic landscape. The city incorporated in 1970, when Adelanto became San Bernardino County's smallest city.
